Wizard's House

"Hey"

The Wizard greets the evil-allured knights the same way every night, with the same word, while casually sitting on the steps of the porch outside of her little home. The building looks handmade, like it was built by people who cared about the place they were going to live. Surrounding it on all sides are fields as far as the eye can see. Vegetables of all kinds, with fruit trees and bushes placed throughout the landscape. Closer to the home are bigger trees, willows and others, providing shade from the strange three suns above. Wherever this is, it isn't the world that the knights know.

Plunged into the ground a mere few feet away from the steps leading up to the home is a handwritten sign that states the following:

Knight Rules:
- Tell others if you want
- You can't reveal others
- The world ends this year

Sometime after the festivities of the evening, after he's started a fire for the night, Gyre sighs. He has to do this. He's about to sleep and he knows he promised to have animal information for his fellow knights tonight.

Much as he doesn't want to deal with Fen... he calls out, "Fen! Can we talk?" and then returns to sullenly poke at the fire. Please be low energy tonight, Fen?

As if they were there all along, Fen steps out of the darkness and practically beams high energy right towards Gyre.

"Hello, my knight, how can I help! Do you have questions I can answer?" If there could be excited bubbles around them right now, they would have them.

Ugh, he's already squinting against the implied light of their energy. This is going to be a nightmare, he's certain.

"I dunno. How much are you able to tell me about the wizard and the protector?"

It's only going to get more bright, they're incredibly excited that Gyre's asking them for answers! They give an immediate hop up and down when he asks and they have to decide where to start!!

"Oh! One of them is bad, and one of them is good! What do you want to know? They don't like each other, not at all! But they've never been mean to me, you know? It's the others that say those things, I hear it from them!

"What things do they say...?" he asks, latching on to anything weird in the way they talk about these two. He feels like he's going to have to pry information from them about this so he's pouncing as quickly as possible on this bit.

"Do you know what happened the first year they got here?"

"They shouted at each other the first year! Everyone was talking about that, they must not have liked each other before that. But we didn't know them before that, so maybe they always shouted? But the others say that sometimes they pick targets they don't like, like they deliberately try to defeat knights! Did you know that Sucecq said the Protector killed their knight one year? I think that sounds like a lie don't you? But I don't think Sucecq is a liar."

Astonishingly, it doesn't seem like Fen took even a single breath that entire time.

Not that they need to breathe.

Well. At least he knows to only ask one question at a time now. He sighs in deep frustration already, trying to figure out which thread to pull first.

"What does that mean, 'targets they don't like'? The wizard says she wants us all to get to the end so she can win, so why would she try to defeat us?"

Fen is immediately hopping up and down, little puffs of anime smoke rising off of their head.

"Because she's bad obviously! She's always trying to get more knights onto her side! If she gets all twelve knights on her side she'll win! She has that hammer that breaks everything!"

They pause after a hop, though, seeming thoughtful and oddly silent for a few moments.

"I don't know if I've ever talked to her."

...goddammit.

"What do you mean about picking targets they don't like, Fen." Uuuuughghgh. "And how does defeating the knights get them on her side?"

"You know! When a knight says they'll never side with you! That's someone they don't like, right? That's what Giqra said one year, that their knight would never side with the Protector! That knight died though, Muraj too! His knight said the opposite when he was a good knight. He would never ever side with the Wizard! And then he died. After that, Sefaq said they must have died because they didn't like them!"

Head. Tilt?

"Um. If they're dead they're not on the protector's side? I guess?"

He rubs his temple, sighing. Sighing forever.

"Have you actually seen any of this? Or is this just gossip?"

"I haven't seen any of it." Head tilt in the other direction.

"Fuck." This is such a useless thing to do!! He knew it was going to be useless!!!

"Have you... Do you know about the thing inside the planet?"

"The others have said they can feel it?" They answer, tilting their head a third time.

"I think it's a person."

"Can you feel it?" he asks, pursing his lips. The thought of a person being trapped inside the world... well, that's not comforting at all, honestly.

"Why do you think it's a person?"

"I can't feel what I can't touch, but I can hear it?" They start slowly walking in a circle thoughtfully. They're trying to think of how to answer his really important questions.

"I can only hear people, so if I can hear it, it's a person?"

"Oh..." He nods very slightly, licking his lips. Okay, progress is being made. Fen seems calm for the first time in their entire life probably.

"What does it sound like? Does it say anything?"

Fen looks so very thoughtful for several long moments, eyes drifting up the nearest tree before they start to topple over. They flop onto their side with a soft 'thud' before they blink back to attention and explain:

"I can't hear it right now." They blink once more before relaxing on their side.

"It said it wanted to meet the knights."

His eyes widen enormously, and he almost thoughtlessly reaches out to put a hand on their side. His fingers run lightly through their fur, and he glances around his camp. Searching.

"Do you know how I can talk to them?"

They let out a big exhale, laying there as Gyre pulls a rub-the-triceratops-tummy scene from Jurassic Park. Before either of them know it, Gyre's gonna be elbow-deep in a pile of crap.

At least that's how the scene in the Pig Knight Movie is going to go. The studio was already writing it.

"I don't know. It talked to me. I don't know if it listens back?"

He nods slowly, letting out a low huff. He just wants this to be easier then it is honestly.

"The next time you hear them, can you ask them? See if they respond then?"

At this point, Fen is about to flip onto their back and be belly-up. They stare at Gyre with this utterly perplexed expression.

"I can try but what if it doesn't respond again?"

"That's fine. Tell me so I know."

He takes a moment to pause and think, glancing downwards at his lap. He needs to figure out the best way to phrase his question so they don't get lost in telling him rumors.

"Hmm... did you come here with the wizard? Forty years ago, I mean?"

Yeah, Fen's belly-up now as Gyre thinks of his next question. They're utterly relaxed in this moment, waiting for the next thing to think about. They feel free from thinking, relaxing here, but it can only last so long.

"Huh, come here?" They question, looking with confusion at Gyre.

"I was always here?"

Gyre looks surprised back, his eyes widening for a moment before he frowns deeply.

"Uh... what? You... What were you before the wizard got here? How long have you been alive...?"
