He stumbles when his boot passes through her and then she's gone, completely imbalanced by the force he put behind it not meeting anything but air. Only once he's there does he actually take a breath and try to process all that. His anger doesn't fade at all here. What she's told him is that they have to kill all the monsters, and that at least some of the kids are monsters.
